I was diagnosed with superficial phlebitis in my left leg. I have pain with our without the compression stockings. I am fearful of doing the laser. About 20 years ago I had a laser treatment on my right leg for cosmetic reasons which left me in a lot of pain. I'm hoping they have improved the procedure.
The endovenous laser treatment (EVLT) is performed through needle puncture access under ultrasound guidance. Typically local anesthesia is used to protect the patient from feeling the energy of the device. The vein is closed from the inside using the energy of the laser. This does not make it a painless procedure. The patient usually has discomfort with the injection of numbing medicine, and after the procedure is sore for 7-10 days along the vein that was treated. This is different than surface laser which is used for smaller more cosmetic types of veins.
