Essential oils can help to temporarily alleviate symptoms associated with the underlying problem of varicose veins, but they do not prevent, treat, or cure venous disease itself.
The use of essential oils dates back to the time of the early Egyptians. Its resurgence over the last 15 years, in the United States and Europe, have lead scientists to evaluate the effectiveness of such oils through inhalation and topical (massage) applications. These essential oils are used for a myriad of discomforts and ailments. Common essential oil for varicose veins which is recommended for venous conditions include cypress, helichrysum, neroli, eucalyptus, lavender, peppermint and chamomile.
In order to understand how these oils are beneficial, you have to know how they affect the body. The sense of smell is one of the most powerful senses in the body. Smell affects your perception of many things. Inhalation of scents generally impacts the mind psychologically. Different scents can illicit different emotions. Therefore, if you use an oil which you identify as pleasant or relaxing, its use can have a positive effect. The essential oils mentioned all have pleasing scents.
Additionally, some oils have been shown, through research, to have a positive impact when used topically. For example, helichrysum when applied with light massage, was found to improve swelling and inflammation. If you are going to use essential oils, I would caution you to use them externally only. Ingestion of certain oils can cause medical complications.
Finally, you have to keep in mind why you are using essential oils — they may work for temporary relief, but don’t help prevent, treat or cure the varicose veins. That’s why it is important to have your symptoms evaluated and monitored by a knowledgeable specialist, so that if and when the time comes for medical help, you can make the appropriate decision for you and your health.
Remember....for over 30 million Americans, varicose veins are much more than a cosmetic issue!
