Question: I wish there was a way to send an image. I have a bulging blue vein. It isn’t huge; it’s about 6 or 7 millimeters across and basically round. It is located on the outside of the calf, midway between knee & ankle. Should I be concerned? Yes, I’m overweight. Yes, I do have leg ulcers as well as the typical discoloration on both legs associated with being overweight. I’m not very active due to much foot/ankle/knee pain.
Answer: Leg ulcers and hyperpigmentation (discoloration) can be caused by underlying venous insufficiency. The one bulging vein is not the only indicator of vein problems. Regardless of your weight, vein disease can and should be addressed in order to heal the ulcerations and prevent further damage and complications of venous stasis.
