How do compression stockings affect a new tattoo?
The compression stocking, once on, should not damage the healing time of a new tattoo.
Question: I wear knee high compression stockings, 20-30 mmHg and am considering getting a tattoo on my lower leg. How will the stocking affect my tattoo’s healing process and is this a bad idea with venous insufficiency in the legs?
Answer: Depending on the significance of your venous insufficiency, it can affect the healing of the skin whether from an injury or tattoo. If is mild insufficiency, the healing of a tattoo on the leg should not be impaired. The compression stocking, once on, should not damage the healing time of a new tattoo, however, the friction of pulling a heavier grade stocking over a new tattoo may irritate the area. You could consider lower the grade of compression for the week after getting the tattoo, or even consider a compression wrap instead.
