Q&A: What Can A Venous Reflux Exam Tell Me?

Jilanne Rose, DNP ANP-BC
May 15, 2018

Question: What can a venous reflux exam tell me? How does this treatment measure my veins effectiveness?

Answer: A venous reflux exam evaluates the size, patency, and timeliness of the circulation in the legs. Blood return to the heart, from the legs, should have no more than a ½ second delay in any given segment of vein.  If there is a longer delay, backflow, or reflux of blood, the circulation is considered impaired.

The key to interpreting these results is based on the patients’ symptoms and physical presentation.  If one has symptoms, and venous reflux, and has failed conservative measures, THEN a discussion can be held regarding the risks versus benefits of intervention.
