Diagnosis of Venous Disease
It is imperative that every patient considering vein treatment of any kind first obtain a vein diagnosis with venous duplex ultrasound and vein mapping by a certified vein specialist. Your initial visit with Jilanne Rose, DNP, ANP-BC includes: a vein screening, followed by health evaluation, physical examination, discussion of your symptoms, and your individual concerns. Ultrasound is vitally important because a patient may believe their venous concern is only mild or cosmetic, oftentimes there is a larger underlying disease process such as Chronic Venous Insufficiency (CVI) or Venous Reflux Disease. The vein mapping portion of the lower extremity ultrasound enables Dr. Rose to identify the correlation between the insufficient veins and your specific symptoms. Vein mapping also provides information for Dr. Rose to determine an appropriate plan of care to include minimally invasive treatments.
As a convenience to our patients, we always have a Registered Vascular Technician (RVT) on staff to perform a thorough venous duplex ultrasound scan and vein mapping. These studies are typically a part of every new patient’s initial visit. There is no need for you to make two separate appointments when we can perform these services in one sitting. Dr. Rose will go over the results immediately because at Advanced Vein Institute of Arizona, we respect your time and we structure a care-plan that accommodates your schedule and desires.

Venous Duplex Scan
An in-depth venous duplex ultrasound scan is carried out on each patient at Advanced Vein Institute of Arizona to identify and gauge abnormal valve and vein functions. Our ultrasonographers Karlea or Susan will evaluate the blood flow and map the venous system of both lower extremities. We use cutting-edge imaging capabilities, ZONE Sonography® Technology (ZST), to allow your vein doctor to determine which veins are normal and which require treatment or monitoring.
Ultrasounds are also used after treatment to confirm vein closure as well as rule out any complications such as Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT). In addition, you may be referred to our vein center by your primary care physician, urgent care, or podiatrist in order to rule-out DVT. In this case, we schedule you the same-day and call your referring doctor with duplex ultrasound results immediately.
During the vein ultrasound, you may feel some discomfort or pressure if your leg is tender prior to the scan, however, this examination is typically painless. It takes approximately 1 hour to complete this duplex ultrasound, and patients should be very well hydrated prior to their appointment. We ask all patients to drink at least 64 ounces of water a day for the three days leading up their initial ultrasound, and avoid compression stocking use the day of the evaluation.

Arterial Screening
We work very closely with podiatrists and orthopedic surgeons to provide preoperative peripheral arterial screening. It is important for patients undergoing lower extremity surgery, that circulation in the legs is evaluated and found to be within normal limits, in order to ensure appropriate healing and minimize the risk of post procedure complications such as infection or blood clots. At Advanced Vein Institute of Arizona, our ultrasonographers Karlea and Susan, and provider Jilanne Rose take the time to thoroughly evaluate your lower extremity circulation and review your medical history, to ensure that your recovery from lower extremity surgery is not compromised by a potential undiagnosed vascular disease.
