VARICOSE COSMETIC TREATMENT AND INSURANCE

Aren’t Varicose Veins Just A Cosmetic Issue?

Anybody with visual varicose veins or spider veins should have them evaluated because despite what most people think about spider veins and them being just cosmetic, often times cosmetic varicose veins are a result of a larger underlying problem such as venous insufficiency or vein disease. I typically recommend anybody with visual symptoms of vein problems to come in and have an evaluation. The evaluation for varicose veins or venous insufficiency is very straight forward. We typically start with a questionnaire asking you some very common simple questions to allow us to better understand what types of issues you are dealing with. In addition to that we like to obtain an ultrasound and that ultrasound evaluates the functionality of each vein that exists in the legs. Usually we pay particular attention to a specific area you might be having discomfort with but the evaluation in general is definitely thorough and complete.

Do Varicose Veins Come Back After Treatment?

That is a misnomer – varicose veins that are successfully treated don’t ever return. Now venous insufficiency, like most progressive diseases, gradually get worse as we get older. It doesn’t necessarily mean that you won’t get other veins in the future that will become abnormal but the same vein that you had treated shouldn’t return.

Does Insurance Cover Varicose Veins Treatment?

I don’t think most patients understand that a large majority of vein treatments are covered under most insurance companies. Regardless of whether you have spider views or a larger underlying problem, once we obtain that evaluation we can better understand what type of procedures will be covered under your particular policy.
